Open Source Business Alliance

What does the OSBA do?

The Open Source Business Alliance (OSBA) – Bundesverband für digitale Souveränität e.V. is the association of the open source industry in Germany and represents over 240 member companies. Together with science and user organizations, it is committed to sustainably anchoring the importance of open source software and open standards for digital change and promoting innovation. The aim is to establish open source as a standard in public procurement as well as in research and business development. Only open solutions can guarantee digital sovereignty, innovation and security in the long term. The OSBA thus makes a decisive contribution to securing Europe’s values and democratic order in the digital age.

IAM Factory AG is a member of the OSB Open Source Business Alliance Bundesverband für digitale Souveränität e. V.

In OSBA working groups, employees of member companies have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary exchange and advance joint projects. A platform is available for this purpose, which can be used to coordinate marketing activities and increase the visibility of relevant topics, among other things. Through joint developments under the umbrella of the OSBA, the goal of digital sovereignty gains additional weight. At the same time, valuable synergies are created that facilitate cooperation and consortia. In this way, ideas are not only discussed, but also implemented sustainably.

What is the significance of open source?

Openness as the key to a secure digital future

Open source refers to software whose source code is freely accessible, modifiable and redistributable. It stands for transparency, collaboration and digital independence. As the code is openly accessible, users can understand how software works and identify potential weaknesses more quickly. At the same time, a culture of collaboration is created in which developers around the world contribute ideas and improvements. This accelerates innovation and knowledge does not remain hidden in individual companies or organizations. Open source thus makes a decisive contribution to greater trust and acceptance in the digital world.

Furthermore, open source is of strategic importance for society, the economy and politics. It enables states and companies to maintain digital sovereignty and free themselves from the monopoly-like dependencies of proprietary providers. Open standards promote competition, reduce costs and facilitate the integration of different systems. Open source also plays an important role in long-term security, as errors are discovered and rectified collectively. Open source is therefore not just an alternative to proprietary solutions, but a key driver of innovation, resilience and independence in the digital age.

Is open source always free of charge?

Appreciation instead of price fixing

Many people still equate open source with “free”. But this misconception is dangerous – because it devalues the work of countless developers who invest their time, expertise and passion in open software. Open source is not the “free buffet of IT” that everyone can help themselves to without giving anything back. Those who only see the price and not the value are overlooking the real core: open source thrives on community involvement, investment and an active community.

Yes, use is often license-free – but adaptation, maintenance, support and further development have their price. And that’s a good thing: Only through professional partners, reliable services and joint investments can open source remain competitive and sustainable. Anyone who thinks they can “get away with it for free” with open source has not understood the principle. Because true appreciation is not shown by paying nothing, but by investing in quality, security and a shared digital future.

Digital sovereignty at the IAM Factory

Why is open source so important?

The advantages of open source

Open source is far more than just a technical alternative to proprietary software – it is a crucial building block for digital sovereignty, security and innovative strength. Open solutions create transparency, strengthen trust in technologies and prevent dependencies on individual providers. At the same time, they promote collaboration and joint further development, which means that software can be improved more quickly and adapted to new requirements.

  • Transparency and trust: The source code is openly visible and verifiable
  • Digital sovereignty: No dependence on individual manufacturers or proprietary standards.
  • IT security: vulnerabilities are detected and rectified more quickly.
  • Community benefit: Improvements benefit everyone, not just individual companies.
